Shepherd of Seniors(SOS)
A Contracted Chaplain Ministry
for Senior Adult Living Centers
The Need
Many times seniors living in housing facilities need a listening ear, a compassionate friend, and spiritual care from someone they know and trust. Some seniors may not have a church family or pastoral support when issues arise. Often seniors will need help sorting out family concerns, exploring spiritual issues, and simply adjusting to life in their new communities. All will need to know that their final wishes have been expressed, recorded, and plans made and shared with
their families/friends,
clergy, and funeral homes.
Some seniors will have issues related to grief, death and the dying process that needs to be discussed with spiritual input. More active residents appreciate Bible studies, worship services, and some fun events and trips outside the facility for spiritual refreshment and fellowship.
Family members may need spiritual support as they determine proper care for their loved ones. Caregivers and staff will have everyday life and work issues. Mediation and reconciliation will often need to be dealt with. An on-site Chaplain can help minister in all these areas.
The Reality & Obstacles
Some senior care facilities have regular Chaplain hours on site. In these settings spiritual care is provided by relationship building and spiritual guidance. However, some newer or smaller senior living facilities cannot afford this kind of spiritual care because of cost factors. They often rely on volunteer contacts for religious services with little or no relationship building, screening, or oversight. Many seniors are left crying out for spiritual nourishment and
refreshment. They need a spiritual shepherd.
The Solution - Shepherd of Seniors
Chaplain Rev. Gary F. Rothwell has organized Shepherd of Seniors (SOS) to help facility managers of senior residences of all sizes provide spiritual care for their residents on a part time, but regular, contractual basis.
The Broad Outline of SOS
It is intended that some services be offered on a regularly scheduled (usually weekly) basis. This type of ministry will allow personal relationshps to be established with the residents and their families, the management and staff. Emergency and expanded ministries are also offered on an on-call basis. See our downloadable brochure for more info.
