About Chaplain Gary:

Chaplain (Rev.) Gary F. Rothwell was born and raised in a small town in southern Arkansas. Having grown up in a Southern Baptist Church, he recalls preaching to his stuffed animals when he was just a lad. The Christian love he experienced in his home and from his church family began moving him along his life-long spiritual journey. While still in his teens, Gary dedicated his life to full time Christian ministry and preached his first sermon in his junior year of high school.

In 1975 Chaplain Gary received a Bachelor of Science degree in physics and math at Ouachita Baptist University in Arkadelphia, Arkansas, where he graduated with honors. He was also commissioned into the US Army Reserves through ROTC and completed seven years of active duty in Texas and Germany. He received his Masters of Divinity in 1986 from Golden Gate Baptist Theological Seminary, in Mill Valley, CA.

That same year, Chaplain Gary was endorsed for military chaplaincy by the American Baptist Churches (ABC), USA. As an Army Reserve Chaplain he served three years in an engineer unit and seven years in a hospital unit. He retired with twenty years of service as a Chaplain (Lieutenant Colonel) in 1998.

During his military career, Chaplain Gary received extensive training for ministry in a pluralistic environment through the Army Chaplain School while attending his Chaplain Basic, Advanced, and Command and General Staff Officer Courses.

Chaplain Gary is an ordained minister by the American Baptist Churches and has over twenty-one years of pastoral ministry, serving churches in California, New Jersey and Creekwood Baptist Church, Rockford, IL. In 1997 he also served for nine months as a Crusade Associate for the San Francisco Bay Area Billy Graham Crusade where he managed the Oakland Crusade Office.

Because of his heart for ministry to seniors, Chaplain Gary has always taken time to reach out to the seniors in his churches by teaching senior Bible studies, arranging senior trips and special events, and making personal calls on the elderly within his congregations. He has also regularly conducted worship services in various senior residences in Rockford.

Chaplain Gary lives in the Rockford area with his wife, Carol, and their two cats. He enjoys fishing, gardening, and desktop publishing. He is president of the Evangelical Ministers Fellowship of Rockford and serves as a Pastoral Consultant for the Evangelical Child and Family Agency in Rockford. He and Carol are members of Central Christian Church in Rockford. Together they enjoy conducting marriage training with couples.
